Introduction
Hiring staff is such a popular topic and there is essentially no education on it, so I am excited to present you with a guide you can use to successfully grow your team and scale your business to the next level. All businesses are completely different, but my hope with this guide is to help prepare you for expansion and growth of your business. By outsourcing tasks and adding extra hands to your team, you can take things off your plate so that you can focus your energy on income producing activities.
If you have purchased this guide, you are already thinking about hiring support staff or adding an associate photographer to your team. Maybe you already have staff and need assistance on how to better train or delegate to them to make your life easier. Adding staff to your team can be incredibly rewarding, but it’s also going to come with major pressure and added stress, so I hope to prepare you for that (and also proactively help alleviate as much stress as possible).
My professional background has been in sales and management, so this part of the job is not foreign to me. I have been fortunate to receive top of the line training by large corporations, specifically on how to train and manage staff. Most photographers do not come from any kind of professional background where these skills would have been learned or taught in a business setting. That’s why we often see our fellow photographers struggle with even the basics of hiring and maintaining employees of any kind.
Not knowing how to properly train or manage staff defeats the purpose of hiring them in the first place. You hire staff with one goal in mind, which is to step away from the task they’ve been hired to complete. There’s nothing worse than paying your employee for a job when you are still required to sit next to them to help complete each task. What is the point! Without proper foundations in place, you’ll never be able to truly step away from anything and will end up paying someone to essentially do nothing.Let’s avoid that all together.
Having been in the Boudoir Photography industry for over a decade, I have watched my colleagues hire associate photographers only to have devastating situations arise within their businesses and relationships with their associates. These situations have led to public disaffiliation, embezzlement, legal cases, and more. Not to mention the added stress and drama this would undoubtedly cause. It’s important to be prepared for many different situations that you may encounter, and especially ones you might not even consider.
